Scrapbooking & Mod Podge Question?
Does anyone have any instructions or ideas how to make cigar purses, pencil boxes or the cardboard type containers with lids that you buy at WalMart and hobby stores. I want to make some gifts for my girls to store keepsakes in. I have just started to learn how to use mod podge...I'm a newbie! Oh and what do you line them with?
Use a collection of papers that go together, pictures that go together, or labels. Heck if you were crazy enough about candy bars, you could even mod podge the wrappers!
Some ideas you could use might be stamps (especially if the box were used to store a stamp collection), cut out pictures from greeting cards, pictures from the funny papers, etc. You could even use magazine pictures for your project. Imagine a box used to store makeup that has pictures of lipstick all over the top.
Place a layer of mod podge down on your wood or cardboard. While it is still wet, put your paper, picture, etc. down on top of the mod podge. Paint another layer of mod podge over top of that. It's simply decoupage. You don't have to paint the entire side of the box at once, you can do a small area at a time, if you prefer. It all depends on patience and drying time.
You can paint the purse before you mod podge it, but that's not necessary. If you do, you can give more space between items in your collection. It'll give your eyes resting space.
After you have finished all the sides, paint one or two extra layers of mod podge over the entire box. Allow time to dry between layers.
Once the outside of the box is done, you can line the inside with velvet, felt, satin, calico, whatever you choose. You've got two choices as to how to line it:
1. Glue felt or sticky backed velvet directly to the inside of the box.
2. Make cardboard templates that fit exactly inside the box and then wrap fabric around these templates. Glue these cardboard templates inside the box. Understand that the fabric will make a marginal difference in the size of the cardboard. This works better with satin and other fabrics that fray. If you choose to do this method, you can very easily pad the lining with a thin layer of batting before you glue it to your cardboard.
